My husband, Lennox Leavett was in the Navy, and saw action in the Western Approaches and in the Mediterranean before he returned to the U.K. and was stationed in Weymouth.
I was working in the NAFFI in Weymouth and we were stayinh in a boarding house there. In August 1945 I was wakened by a terrible noise in the street below. I opened the window and called out to ask what was going on and heard the wonderful news that war in Japan was over.
I woke Lennox then flew round the house, knocking on all the doors and calling out "Wake Up! Wake Up!, the war is over" We all got dressed, went out onto the street, then made our way to the promenade. By then there was quite a crowd and we had a wonderful sing-song.
At 3 o'clock that morning we finished up at the local church where a Thanksgiving service was held - a lovely end to a wonderful night.
