Kathleen's story -
"When the War began, I was aged 23. I was living in Felixstowe Road in Ipswich. I didn't have to participate in the War, as I was already working in a Tobacco Factory (Imperial Tobacco Company). My husband didn't have to participate either, as he was working for the Navy. War was declared Sunday dinnertime, when I was then getting ready to go out for the day with the cycling club. It was shocking, but we were all expecting it.
My strongest memory was when a bomb was dropped on Holywells Park. As a matter of fact it was the biggest bomb that was ever dropped on Ipswich during the War. Luckily, the bomb buried itself in the ground and no extreme damage was caused. The bomb disposal team came and got rid of it. Personally, I think that it was aiming for Ipswich Docks and the Gas Holders. I would have hated to think what would have happened if it had not buried itself'.
