At the time of Dunkirk, besides our troops being brought home, there were civilians who managed to get to England. Billeting these was a bit of a problem and people with spare rooms found themselves with strange foreign speaking guests.
My Aunt had a family of four from Belgium billeted on her, whilst my parents stored their strange cycles. These you had to back-pedal to operate the brakes. To preserve the tyres, these were hung up on a frame in our ‘work room’ until such time has the owners found permanent accommodation.
