My parents had booked me to travel to my mother's aunt in USA, as an evacuee. We lived on the outskirts of London, and they thought it safer if I were away from the bombing. Two days before I was to travel north to board the ship, the "City of Benares" my mother removed me from the list and decided that we would all stay together and face whatever came together. As history records, the "City of Benares" was painted white, with red crosses, the Germans were told when it would sail and from which port, and that it was carrying only children evacuees and their escorts. The ship was torpedoed just hours after leaving port and there were very few survivors.
