I was 15 and a messenger in the civil defence. One night the alarm sounded and I should have reported to my C.D. Post in Castle Road Bedford. Unfortunately, being young, I didn't hear the sirens and my mother almost went mad trying to wake me. Eventually she succeeded and I got to my post just as the all clear sounded! When I got home my father, a veteran from The Great War, berated me with the warning ,"If you'd been asleep when you should have been on duty in 1914 they'd have shot you!"
