I was evacueated from Meadow road Lambeth in London to Nacton with my parents to live with my Grandparents. The
toilet was down the garden. Lighting by gas lamps. No telephone. They also took other temporary evacuees from `London. Grandpa was in the Home Guard.
The Royal Fusiliers camped in the grounds of Orwell Park with another regiment based at Broke Hall. My father went into the RAF, spending three and a half years in India.
We only had 12 oz of sweets per month until 1953. Bread was rationed until 1958.
Other Nacton residents took in soldiers wives on a B & B basis.
No communications - army officers just knocked on the door to
confirm accommodation available.
