My mother鈥檚 next door neighbours had a fish and chip shop at Bentley, at West End. It was a Sunday and they had gone out. When they came back the house had gone. A fair bit of West End had been flattened by the Germans. They had been going to bomb the tank factory at Sprotborough and were going down the sidings when they dropped the bombs.
My father was in the AFS then the NFS. He was going to a fire on his bike as he had missed the fire engine. When the bombs dropped he was blown off his bike and down the embankment. He went through some wooden railings but he climbed back up the embankment and back on to his bike and went on to join the others at the fire.
