When the war started I was 10 years old and lived in Fisbury before being evacuated for 2 years to Luton where I was fostered by Mrs Eyere at 32 Chilton Rise. I was with my sister Patricia, two years younger, but she was later sent to Cornwall. I came back to my school which was bombed and completey erased. I was then schooled at Checker Street. Then father decided we should move to Morden. I was in the boys brigade in the 8th company. When we used to play the doodlebugs made a noise when they came over and we would take cover. Schooling was quite different then, we had elderly teachers whop stood for the regular teachers who had to school the army and this made it easier to play truant. Another thing I remember is the silver shreads of paper that were dropped from the sky to disturb the radio frequency. I also remember the guns over Mitcham common and all the shrapnel that would come down from it and playing in the ruins from the destroyed buildings.
