Story told to Christine Barker at the VE Day Celebrations in Beverley 2005

We used to spend most of our evenings in the air raid shelter. One particular evening one of these flying bombs went over the house. My father called me out to see this flying bomb. It was during the night so dark and all you could see was the flames coming out of the back of this bomb, and hear the sound. Where it landed I don’ t know but its one of the few things I really remember — I’d be about eight at the time, only a child still at school.

I wasn’t evacuated from National Avenue, Hull which was on the outskirts of the city at the time and even though Hull was so badly bombed we all stayed at home there.
