For a non-drinker such as Bill, the local cafés had few attractions. One night, curiosity led him to explore the nightlife he had heard so much about. He set off with two Doncaster mates but the expedition did not last long. The three of them were surrounded by girls as soon as they sat down.
Bill was between his two friends and was able to make his escape. Shortly afterwards the gang was reunited without any mishap for the walk home along the quay.
‘I think we gave up the high, or low, life after that.’
This story was submitted to the people’s War site by a volunteer from CSV Oxford on behalf of the late Bill Harvey. It is a transcript of his own diary and taped interviews and he gave written permission for all the material to be published.
