Grandmas sister Doreen joined the N. A. F. F. I.. and served at four differernt camps down south. Her job was canteen duty and from keeping food and cups of tea or coffeegoing all day and night they kept the atmoshere as homely and friendly as possible, so that the troops did not feel so homesick. Along with her friends , outside the normal duties, she would darn socks, do their ironing or even help them write letters. They also put on concerts which were always welcomed. Two small musical groups used to appear. Onegroup had musicians, singers and dancers and the other group had made their own instruments, such as tin boxes for drums, comb and paper, blowing across bottle necks, two spoons held back to back and then hit off the other hand or legs and anything else that they could use to make some sort of musical sound to accompany their singing.
