I was from St.Luke's church choir in Weaste and we had come to Manchester Cathedral to practice singing for a Christmas service and to augment the cathedral choir. It was during the blitz and I was about 12 years old. We weren't afraid of coming into the city. After we came out the sirens had gone off and the area had been blitzed. Everywere was blazing we boys were excited but were disappointed when a policeman took us to air raid shelters. The shelters were packed and the salvation army were serving tea. I think we werein there for about 3 hours and put on the bus home. It may have been midnight when we got home. I think the coop building was the onlyu one left standing, all the warehouses were flattened.
Prior to this I had been evacuated to Lancaster with with my three sisters. We had to wait in a Methodist Church Hall to be allocated a family we were given a bag containing a can of bully beef, a kitkat and a can of milk. I was one of the triplets and we had one other sister. When everyone else had been sent off with a family we were left behind because our mother had left instructions that we should not be separated. Eventually I was take in by a postman's family and my sisters were taken by another family. I was quite spoilt by the poeple I was with but my sisters were not so happy so we returned home just in time for the blitz.
