The German鈥檚 surrender in Italy 鈥 I return to Foggia. I stayed in a school opposite a small house, which was housing a peasant family with whom I struck a friendship. I can get by in Italian, one day the 8-year-old daughter is sent to find me in the school and she said: 鈥淢ama wants to see you鈥. I went over there immediately to find Mama in bed 鈥 with her new baby 鈥 she wanted me to be the first to see the new bambino. Italy was at war with us when we landed.
