It was the beginning of the Battle of Britain. My family lived in Redhill. I was playing in the garden with my brother, Michael and some friends. My mother and a friend's mother called us to the house immediately.
We looked up as we ran toward them. The sky was full of aeroplanes. They all seemed to be silver, except for one. This one looked black. My mother said that the black one was a German plane. The other mother replied, "No, they are all Germans". They must have been going to London.
We were all ushered under the stairs for safety. Our parents tried to keep us amused by playing memory games. For instance, the first person would say, "I went shopping and bought an apple for Angela". The next one had to repeat this and add a "Ball for Brian". This continued until we couldnt remember anymore, but if you got through the alphabet you were doing well. To this day I feel like this has helped me with my memory recall.
