During the raids in Nottingham we were evacuated from St Philips School to Burton Joyce. Myself and my elder sister were billeted with Mr. John Upton — an upstanding policeman. The problems arose when my mum came to see us the first weekend of our stay. Mrs. Upton told my mother that they’d be out when we returned so could she leave the children, us, in the shed. My mum was infuriated and stated that there was no way that her kids were waiting in any shed. My mother immediately took us home.
