When we reached 15 (I think the official age was 16 but nobody bothered) we all joined one of the civilian services and I joined the AFS (Auxilliary Fire Service). We had very smart uniforms in Navy Blue and it was great.

My bike used to get put on the back of the Fire Engine and when there was a 'shout' I would go out with the crew. Then, if the phone lines had been cut ( and they often were) I was used as a messenger to relay information to the base.

After every shift, we boys - and girls went off to the Forum Shelters where a Mrs Bayliss ran a canteen. We were given a mug of tea and a bun - it was great.
