How to amuse yourself, living in an area surounded by areodromes.we often went off on our bikes and through the hedges to look at the bombers in the dispersal areas. These were guarded by personnel armed with a carbine but as they were on their own they were always pleased with the visitand a chat and let us up close to the areoplanes.
Sometimes aircraft got in trouble and , a B17 fortress bomber crashed near to where we lived and exploded.Parts of the plane were stuck up in tree and another piece went through the lock-keeper's house roof. When the fires died down the next day all the local people came to collect a few souvenirs. The Ammunition from the many machine guns, were prize aquisitions we boys found that by removing the coredite from the cartridge cases and magnesium from the noses of the bullets we were able to stage firework from the window of the boy's toilets!!!
