I was in the playground at Hereson Infants and my brother came up to me and told me that my father was at the fence. My father was dressed in Army uniform, but I didn鈥檛 recognise him. He asked me for a kiss but I wouldn鈥檛 kiss him as I was too embarrassed. He gave me some chocolate which we never usually had. The teacher took it from me after play and gave it to me at the end of the school day.

Another memory was one of being given oval shaped rush mats on arrival at school. We were told to lay on them and have a sleep because we had lost so much sleep due to the bombing.

During Air Raids we were made to go down the tunnels with most other children. My brother was sickly and for that reason we were not evacuated.

There was a lot of bombing around Manston and Ramsgate. Denmark Rd was obliterated and the gas works was bombed.

A reservoir was built in Hereson Rd, opposite the catholic school. This was built to draw from in case the pipes were damaged by bombing.
