It only occurred to me recently that my father Charles Samuel Jackman served in both World Wars from the beginning to the end.
He was a regular soldier in the Royal Field Artillery and was sent to France with the British Expeditionary Force in 1914. He was a Sergeant and I don鈥檛 know how many years he served but he was eventually discharged after the war and had his own business painting and decorating.
He was a member of the Old Contemptibles in Birmingham who I believe had to have something special on a medal to show that they were in at the beginning.
He joined the Balloon Barrage in 1938 and was called up in August 1939. He was transferred in due course to be in charge of catering at various camps. I always remember his number, it was 849842 he was a Flight Sergeant.
He was discharged in group 1 as he was over 50 and came out with his civilian suit etc.
He then continued with his painting and decorating.
