I was 13 when I was evacuated from Liverpool to Bridgenorth. I travelled on a small train with 9 other children in the same compartment. It was overcrowded and very noisy! I was the oldest child and the youngest probably only 5. I tried to look after the others but I was feeling frightened too….
We were placed in a hotel for a while then moved to a small cottage where I can remember having to share a bed with 3 or 4 other evacuees.
I couldn’t settle so returned to Liverpool in 1940.
I can remember the air raid shelters but was hiding under the stairs of our house the night the house next door got a direct hit.
We endured 11 days of constant bombing and dog fights in the air. I’ve never forgotten it.
