This story was heard as part of a reminiscence project at Myrddin Day Centre, Carmarthen. It is contributed to the People's War website with the author's permission.
I left school at 14 and worked in a shop - a baker's shop in Francis Terrace. The town was very busy with evacuees - mostly from London. I was living in Priory Street. I worked from 8.30 to 5.30 at the bakery, which made bread and cakes on the premises. Some were taken in a van to the other shop in Lammas Street. There was rationing and sometimes things were short but we mostly got what we needed.
