I was born in Broadwell, Foxes Row. The war years were very quiet until the Home Guard was formed. The only excitement was when a plane crashed in a field at the bottom of Kennel Lane.
I volunteered for the Army before I was 18 and in 1944 was passed to Marylies Barracks, Glasgow for Training. The first thing I remember was the sergeant kicking the door open for us to get up. I then went to Reservoir Camp, Gloucester and was then posted to the 2nd battalion Gloucestershires and finished up in a town in Germany called Soest. There was a camp filled with displaced persons which the British dealt with early in 1946. We were posted to Berlin to take over from the Guards. Our barracks was called Waldkraken House and was in the wood. The Russian troops were about 20 yards away. We had quite a bit of trouble with them. I remember one stole a bike, fell off it and was shot.
