The Sunday Graphic 23rd March 1941 centre spread of the first pictures taken in the North Atlantic, it's me aged three months the youngest passenger, I had just arrived in Liverpool after my twelve day adventure about which I remember nothing, but the epic was reported by a "woman Passrnger as playing tag with enemy submarines, bombers and floating mines.
This ship had survived Narvic, Dunkirk and had become "The most wanted" target on the German list of phantom grey luxury cruise liners, now playing the part of an armed merchant ship that had become the White Star blockade runner, captained by Staff Captain Sorrell.
How close can you get to death aged three months in the Atlantic, too close is the answer when the enemy submarine surfaced our look outs put us into a corkscrew that had us heading back at full speed towards the American shores we had just left.
All very dramatic as reported at the time , but what did my mother have to say about her epic voyage.
"It was just amazing to see those members of the American Eagle Squadron take you under their wing, "I'll feed the squadron leader"Carnation milk all the way, he needs a walk I'll take him for a stroll on deck. For them a baby on board was in someway the future they where fighting for.
The pictures say it all,but can you imagine dances, card play , movies and general banter plus a hairdresser on an armed merchat vessel, my word we did it in style.
