I left school at 14 years old, and went to work at Crossfields Soap Factory[Lever Group]. I worked there for 2 years I attended night school and was advised to take up draughtmanship fulltime, I did. I worked at RAF Burtonwood [later American Airbase], where I worked on plans for mobile test engine beds, to be used in the Western Desert. No one complained about the hours we worked I worked 8-5 on 6 days and a morning on the 7th, that included Sundays. Everyother week we got Sundays morning off. That day we went cycling with the cycling club. This was all part of the War effort. People came from further afield to work when in the past they would not have.
