I left from Bristol bound for North Africa where we disembarked at Algiers. We were told that we were going east to Haute Kabylie near the border with Tunisia. Most people who have spent hollidays in the mediterranean costal resorts have memories of warm sunlit days, but in winter it can be miserably wet and cold. After a few hours our train was climbing into the Atlas Mountains and there was snow everywhere. We stopped at Setlf and I was astonished to see the locals walking through the snow with bare feet. The next stop was Constantine and soon after that I was taken up to a small hill with two tents where I was told that Italian planes came over each night and dropped small bombs.
