I worked in the pits at Barrow, Rockingham and Woolley. We used to do 8-hour shifts then started doing double shifts.
I remember the blackout, I lived at Worsbrough Dale with my mum and dad and brother and sister. We used to go to the cinema and see the newsreels. I never went to dances, my wife did. I loved to go bowling, I won two cups, in my free time.
My wife always managed to feed us well; we had three children all born in the war.
