The 82nd West African Division had been formed with the intention of having the ability to operate without transport. To achieve this we had a large body of men called the 鈥淎uxiliary Group鈥�.

They were basically labourers in uniform. They could carry loads of forty to fifty pounds on their heads. At first they were not armed, but they were later given rifles which they did not like because of the extra weight they had to carry.

One drawback with them was the tendency, if they heard a shot fired, they would drop their loads and disappear into the bush. It could take an hour to get them back again.
