This story takes place at English Electric Company factory. At the start of the war, several people were sent to London to learn about aircraft as we'd only made trains before then.

These people came back and began to teach others how to go about it. We got some different machines to do the job. Our engineers had to take all the machines to bits.

We made Hampden bombers and Halifax bombers. They took us to Salmesbury to see the finished aircraft.

I worked before then at Siemens Electrics.

We started a forces fund, I have all sorts of memorabilia that supports my story.

People were doing things that they had never fone before. We had evacuees from Coventry and prisoners from Walton Prison even helping out.

It was great atmosphere, lots of friends and entertainment.

We worked long hours but there was a good spirit and we all helped each other.

Message 1 - glasgow areoplastics

Posted on: 23 February 2004 by rosie

My grandfather, Edward Mellon worked at the areoplastics factory in glasgow during WW11. I am trying to find some infomation about a lady known only to me as "kitty".She worked there at the same time as my grand father and they had a child. My grand father was married at the time and Kitty was left to raise her son on her own. This subject was taboo in my family and as both my grandparents have now past on i am desperately trying to find these people, as my mother as always talked about the half brother she never got to meet. If anyone could give me a steer in the right direction I would be so very grateful.
Regards Rosie
