My mother was a Nursing Sister in charge of the first aid post at Hadleigh,Essex. My father was in charge of the ARP for our area and my Grandfather was an Air raid Warden.I was a schoolboy who attended Westcliffe High School for Boys and in 1940 we were evacuated to Belper in Derbyshire..We went to school in a church in the morning and to Strutts School in the afternoon. As I recal.Belper was bombed the first night we were there and the German Aircraft dropped two or more "Oil bombs".We understood they were trying to set fire to the Big Mill there.I returned to Hadleigh in 1942 and went to school at Clarks Commercial College, one of the few schools still operating in the Southend area. In February 1943 I joined the Army as a boy at the age of 15 and a half in the Royal Signals. You see the German Army wasn't the only ones to have "Boys".
Of course we were never put into combat.I served 24 years in the Army and retired as a Radio Technician
Warrant Officer Class 1..
