Every night during the blitz, our Mum would make us go down the air raid shelter under a block of flats until the air raid was over and the all clear siren sounded. One particular night, my brothers Jimmy and Lenny didn't want to go down the shelter - my other brother, sister and I had to go as we were younger. Jimmy and Lenny begged mum to stay and wanted to just sleep in their bed (which was under a huge glass window - the length of a wall. Mum finally gave in and said they could stay but they MUST sleep under the bed. The boys argued about that but mum - in all her wisdom - knew best. They were only allowed to not go down the shelter if they slept under the bed.
Well, during the night there was a nasty air raid (as were they all) and a bomb dropped near by blowing that long glass window of the bedroom clear into the room and it shattered all over the bed. My brothers Jimmy and Lenny were safe from the blast, safe from all the splintered glass, and safe with their lives.
Thank God for our Mum, her stubborness, wisdom, and love for her children. Those boys would never have made it had it not been for our Mum.
