Title: Experiences of a Staff Nurse.
My family were all involved in the war effort. My father and older brother were both in the Army, my younger brother was in the Navy and my mother worked in a foundry in Carnoustie painting Bailey bridges. I was a staff nurse at a civilian hospital.
On 6th June I was working at the hospital on night duty as usual and at 3 in the morning we heard the drone of planes going overhead and we all had suspicions that something big was going on. It was not until 09.00 hours that we heard on the Radio that the invasion had started.
After our night duty supper we went to the flat roof of the nurses’ home and saw planes and guiders without number crossing overhead blocking out the entire sky. It seemed a continuous procession but at this time we had to go to bed ready for the next shift at the hospital.
