This story was told to East Ayrshire Staff dutring their Tea Party of 11th June 2004 by Margaret Cochrane.
Margaret Cochrane remembers the North Staffs Regiment who were billeted in Newmilns, Ayrshire and accepted into ordinary homes. Their wives came to stay sometimes and went to Church on Sunday.
The Colonel stayed with Margaret’s family and he was a bachelor – the Regiment was sent to North Africa and came back a couple of years later after a terrible campaign. The Colonel had been demoted as he had refused to take the men back into action as they had been on the front line for several years with little respite. His men held him in even more regard as he had tried to keep them safe.
Some Glasgow evacuees were billeted in the Church hall in Newmilns. Margaret helped with the WRVS to serve them tea.
