I was evacuated from Coventry after our home was bombed. I was sent to Knowle, near Birmingham, which was only 13 miles away. Some kids knew this and they went straight back home and the police had to chase them to fetch them back.
I was 8 and thought it was a the end of the world. I remember it like it was yesterday - we all slept on the floor in the village hall. Then I was billetted out the next day - we went to the village school and were told where to go. I was sent to a couple, the lady was a Shropshire lass married to a special constable and had a son of 4. I stayed for 18 months while everyone else went back.
In the school holidays the lady would send me to her parents' farm at Abdon in South Shropshire. Its only 7 miles from Church Stretton and its so remote even the locals don't know where it is!
I had a wonderful time - 2 older lads to play with - rabbitting, mushrooming, watercressing and berrying. What a contrast to Coventry!
After the war I did my National Service and then I came back to Shropshire to work for a racehorse stable.
