Margaret Hannaford lived with her father in a cottage in the grounds of Churston House between Paignton and Brixham. The house was full of American soldiers, like all the big houses and hotels in the area.

One night, there was a knock at my bedroom window. It was Margaret with a huge joint of beef. The Americans had all gone. No-one knew where they had gone, but they had left piles of food behind. Margaret was going around to all her friends dishing out joints of meat and other food.

Next day, D-Day - except we didn't know what was happening until later - my mother and I had roast beef, something we had not had since meat was put on the ration.

It was a wonderful meal - never to be forgotten.
