When I was seven years old we lived in a little village near Barnsley, in a semi-detached house next to a garage which sold petrol. It was 1942.
American soldiers were billeted further up the road and they often called at the garage to fill up their jeeps etc. All the jeeps had a name written on the side, often called after girl friends etc., and I was fascinated by them. I decided to write them all down in little notebooks.
But one day two large American officers arrived and wanted to interview my Mother and Father and me. They asked to see my notebooks and I was told I had to tear them all up and never do this again.
I didn't understand at the time but I suppose I COULD have been spying on them, at seven years old!!
