I came from the East End of London, Ilford. The East End took most of the damage in the second World War, and my street - Quicket Street, Bow E3 - was bombed out in the early days of the blitz.
I managed to get my mother, a widow, lodgings in Norfolk where I was stationed, and she eventually became the tenant of an empty farmhouse which some kind farmer no longer required. She was able, at a later date, to bring her mother and her sister to live at the farm, and they were all together, all through the war.
