The management in the factory where I worked were concerned about the safety of the female staff, so they built a lookout post on the roof, which gave a good view of the dock area of London. Certain members of staff volunteered to act as lookouts. From the roof we could see the German bombers coming up the Thames, looking like silver fishes. On the site we would press a button warning the office staff that they should head for the shelters. At night time we used to go to the roof again and watch out for the bombers. Being near Alexandra Palace, which has two large lakes in its grounds, which at full moon would be very visible to enemy bombers. Also the main railway lines from Euston to the north. Consequently this would be a main target. When we were on night duty you could count the bombs dropping from the dock area in groups of six at a time. After they had dropped their bombs, the aircraft would reassemble at Alexandra Palace before heading back to Germany. You could always tell the difference, from the noise, between a German bomber and any other aircraft, because the sound of the engines differed greatly from the British night fighters.
