My grandfather Victor was a tank driver in the second world war. Over 30 when the war borke out he was one of the older people in his team.
He had always been fascinated in other languages and cultures and so enjoyed the experience of getting to know Austrian and Italian families. After the war he took my father and grandmother back to stay with a family in the Austrian mountains he had known during war time. My grandfather couldn't speak any German and the family could speak little English, but they got on well and remained friends for decades.
