(Told to Christine Barker at the VE Day Commemoration in Beverley 2005)

As a young man I served, was wounded and was a prisoner of war on Crete.

If it hadn鈥檛 been for the Battle of Crete Germany would鈥檝e won the war because for one thing we destroyed his paratroops, he never used them again after the Battle of Crete.

We also delayed the invasion of Russia by a few weeks, it wasn鈥檛 the Russians that beat the Germans, it was their winter. They were at Stallingrad when they froze to death. They ought to have all bloody froze to death.

People don鈥檛 realise that if it wasn鈥檛 for what happened on Crete Germany would鈥檝e won the war.

Message 1 - Crete

Posted on: 06 November 2005 by Tom the Pom

Having survived many encounters with Arab bandits in the wilds of Palestine prior to WW2 in 1939 and the battle of Sidi Barrani in the Wesern Desert against Mussolini's black shirted Fashists, I noticed we The 1st Bn Argyll& Sutherland Highlanders were honoured with some new recruits and some re-enforments from the 2nd Bn from India.

Our depleted Battalion due to booby traps and snipers in the wilds of Palestine, and some of the actions in Jerusalem,Hiafa, and other towns and villages against Bandits and Terrorists, was now up to strength again and were bundled off to Crete to try to persuade the Germans, who so far had ridden rough shod over most people with out a "Bitte or Danke"(Please or thank you) it was not a good idea to come, "Goose stepping" where we the Argylls were sun bathing.
It was obvious they had not read Charles Atlas's warning, "Yo kick sand in mah face and ah will personally re-arrange yourn!"
So the Argyll's were shipped out to Crete and the rest is history except to add that the Germans got the biggest shock or their lives when they sent over their Parachutists.
The first wave was a disaster for the Germans since none survived.

Hitler did not do his usual little tap dance after the battle of Crete
But some one did give him a box of hankies and a couple of asprins.
