My aunt Anne was bombed out three times in Pendlebury and Swinton, she had 5 children and she took it very personally that she was the only one in our family to be bombed out and she thought the Germans were having a go at her. She kept all her personal documents in a card board box in a carrier bag, which she slept with and took with her everywhere, which was a good job because she wouldn鈥檛 of had any marriage or birth certificates otherwise.
My father had a reserved occupation but he used to patrol the village when he was not at work. We lived in Unworth which was high up with lots of countryside between us and Manchester city centre. He was on fire duty patrolling the village at Christmas time. He could see the flames in Manchester city centre. From Salford bus station right up to Piccadilly was in ruins. Piccadilly gardens and st Mary鈥檚 gate were all bombsights. Manchester cathedral it鈥檚 rumoured the roof actually lifted off the walls and fell back down again with the vibrations of the bombs.
