This story was submitted to the peoples war site by Tara Drake from St George's School, Broadstairs, Kent and has been added to the website on behalf of Mrs Wibberley with her permission and Mrs Wibberley fully understand the sites terms and conditions.
Mrs Wibberley was about 4 when this memory happened and remembers it very well. At that time she was living on a farm at Grove near Canturbury. Close by there was an army base.It was a search light regiment.
"One day everybody in the neighbourhood plus workers and ourselves, were picking potatoes in the field. A little later on, my mother brought the drinks up to the field. There wasn't enough to go around so there was none left for me. Some soldiers who knew me and felt sorry for me smuggled me into the camp to give me a drink. Within mintues of being in the camp the commanding officer did an inspection and I had to be hidden in a shed covered up with sacks! I stayed there for an hour whilst the officer was inspecting the camp and I could eventually be let out! Can you imagine that nowadays."
