This story was submitted to the People's War Site by a volunteer from CSV Actiondesk on behalf of Clifford Buttery and has been added to the site with his permission. Mr Buttery fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

During the war I worked in a factory in Grantham. The factory worked 24 hours with meal breaks at mid-day and midnight. At one point they closed the canteen for the midnight break, so we made other arrangements for food. About 9pm 2 men would go round the factory taking food orders, at 11pm a man would cycle to the fish and chip shop to drop off the orders, then at 11.30pm trucks would go and collect the food. The claxton would sound at midnight for the men to collect their food. Then one night the fish and chip shop was bombed.
