I was a teenager when the war ended but we were bombed in Ker Street and Mum and my four sisters were under the stairs, when we were told to go to the shelter under the road in the Park area. Dad was away in the Navy. We were evacuated to Wadebridge but all the time we were there it was quiet and Mum had us brought home. I worked in the shop and remember all the rationing, also we had had a big party in the streets on Coronation day when everyone was friendly and helped each other. Everyone brought out different dishes and plenty of ice cream.
We had a lot of Americans stationed in Catherine Street, and I used to enjoy the sailors marching down to St Joseph鈥檚 Church on a Sunday. Mother had a parrot that whistled and with four girls looking out of the window, we often got in trouble, as you could see a smile on some faces!
