My Granny, Mrs Beresford, lived in Great Hale and had two lovely Land Army girls staying with her. One of them, now Mary Lindley, married a local farmer and stayed, but the other was already married and went back to Leicester. Edna, the Leicester lady, was an accomplished pianist and teamed up with other Land Girls and formed a dance band. They played for the village dances and became firm favourites.
Like other villages, Heckington had Home Guard, Observer Corps, Air Raid Wardens etc. Sometimes the siren would go in the middle of the night and my sister Shirley and I were carried down to the cellar and tucked up among the beer barrels for safety. Mum had mattresses along the shelves and we apparently just slept on regardless. Since alcohol was rationed there was plenty of room in the cellar.
