It must have been about 1941 when, as an 8 year old child, I stood with my mother chatting with our next door neighbour over the back garden fence. The 'all clear' had gone and nothing spectacular had occured during the 'warning'.
We heard an aeroplane coming towards us, which wasn't unusual as we lived a few miles from DeHavillands Aerodrome but, suddenly it came nearer and very low and, as we looked up, we saw a big black cross on the side and I can see the pilots face, even now, wearing his goggles and grinning down on us.
We all dashed into our houses and the aeroplane continued over our housesto DeHavillands, Hatfield, where, I believe, he dropped his bombs and did some machine gunning.
I'm sure he didn't make it back to Germany and why he spared us I don't know!
Apparently, he was a 'straggler' - one of the enemy planes that got through after the others had been shot down or driven home.
