鈥溾o such undertaking has been received and consequently we are at war with Germany.鈥 I remember Chamberlain鈥檚 words, softly spoken, relayed through our brown Bakerlite wireless. I am six years old, aware that I am listening to something 鈥 the impact of which will change my world - our world - yet not really understanding what it means.
And when the first air-raid siren wails, all the people leave their houses and rush out into the streets, talking in groups. A lot of people go down to the air-raid shelter that has been built in the park. The atmosphere is buzzing and exciting with undertones of fear. It is the Phony War because nothing happens.
