My war was a very quite one except for one experience which was exciting but-non-fatal! The German bombers mistook our little village in Cumbria for Barrow-in-Furness to the north of us. They dropped scores of high explosives but they all fell on the moors and no one was hurt — I was a schoolgirl at the time, but I helped my mother polish off what was left of our last bottle of whiskey as the house shook!!
