Rudolf was 10 years old in 1941 when, as a Jew he was forced to flee Germany and become a refugee in England. He stayed with the Handscombes on their farm in Shefford until Autumn 1944. One day, Mrs Handscombe had left Rudolf some tea then went out. When the young Wag Handscombe came home Rudolf was calling 鈥淐harlie, Charlie!!鈥 Wag said, 鈥淲hat鈥檚 the matter?鈥 and Rudolf replied, 鈥淭he goat鈥檚 come to tea and eaten all the sugar and my cake.鈥 Rudolf was as white as a ghost. 鈥淗elp me, help me!鈥 he shouted. 鈥淐ome on Gerdi out you come,鈥 said Wag. Poor old Rudolf, he didn鈥檛 live it down because when he went to school, his classmates kept saying to him, 鈥淗as the goat come to tea today?鈥 Then one day Wag saw the Rabbi who said, 鈥淗as the goat been to tea today Charles.鈥 Wag replied 鈥淣o not lately I don鈥檛 let him come anymore, it will frighten Rudolf to death.鈥
