As so many men had been called up to the army in 1939 and 1940, there was a shortage of labour everywhere in France. When the armistice was signed with Germany, the baker in our village of Les Vans was made a prisoner of war in Germany and his wife was unable to make bread for their shop. She was able to sell bread but not make it, and needed a man for this. She was unable to find anyone. At the request of this lady the German army unit occupying the area sent her one of its soldiers who was a baker by trade. His name was Willi. He worked in the bakery of Les Vans until almost the end of the war when he became a prisoner of war himself.
