I was apprenticed to the International Stores, the 'greatest grocers in the world' from 1941 - April 1944 and then two months later I got called up in the Army. I was 18 on 20 June, I got my papers to go up next Thursday. What I remember most was we had to go to Kingston-on Thames in 1944 when the buzz bombs were falling because my height did not tally with my weight. We got there on a Wednesday and flying bombs dropped out the front at 5 o'clock on the Friday morning and knocked my boots down on my head because I had iron railings over my head. It's often made me smile.
